Why the Life of the Mind is Important

I am busy pushing through George Guthrie's commentary on the book of Hebrews from the NIV Application Series for my last class. I was reading something that impacted me this morning. The reason Amie and I believe so strongly that providing "Theological Famine Relief" is of great importance for church leaders in Kenya is articulated well in Guthrie's book.

Guthrie writes, "In Pensees Blaise Pascal wrote, "Man is obviously made for thinking. Therein lies all his dignity and his merit; and his whole duty is to think as he ought." Right thinking can lead to right feeling, right acting, right outcomes - although it does not necessarily do so. Without right thinking, however, we are in danger of having a zeal for God that is not in accordance with knowledge (Rom. 10:2). In a holistic approach to Christian faith heart and head, co-lovers of God, dance...[later he quotes Carl F. H. Henry and Kenneth Kantzer from an interview with CT magazine where they explain]...If we neglect the life of the mind, "our pagan culture is going to overwhelm us."

Christianity cannot ignore the life of the mind. Mark 12:30, "And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength." Christianity is exploding in Africa but we believe it is critical for us to help in developing the life of the mind in the Kenyan church. So that fellow believers can act in accordance with knowledge and be equipped to reach the unreached.

  1. Right on! This is such a critical truth, "As a person thinks, so he becomes." Thanks for sharing your studies with us. p
