Food

Many of you know that East Africa is enduring a great food shortage. I feel insulated from what is going on in Northern Kenya and into parts of Africa here at Machkos. We are eating well here at Scott. There is always just enough never vast amounts of food always just enough. It is simple. There is always a rice, or another starch food, a small portion of meat to cover your rice with, and then a vegetable. No dessert. There generally is a small amount of fruit. Unlike our society where there is always vast amounts of left-overs when eating buffet style that is not the case here. You may not get seconds because there is none. We are not going hungry by any stretch but it makes me realize how we take food for granted. Food is a gift from God. A daily reminder of our dependence on God. We are more fragile than we like to think. Africa makes a newcomer like us feel your mortality and humanness in ways you do not experience in your own culture. It is rugged here. There are rocks, thorns and all kinds of new creatures. Yet, it is beautiful. A demonstration of our God’s mighty power. Food is His gift. Just like salvation is His gift to us. We must learn to depend entirely on Christ for our salvation and for our food.

  1. These are precious thoughts! Oh how complete is our sense of entitlement even when we bow our heads to thank God for our food! Forgive us Lord, you provide all we have. Remind us to share.
